10 Days Devotional - Day 5: Intercession: Jesus’ New Commandment

Day 5: Intercession: Jesus’ New Commandment

“My children, I will be with you only a little longer.” “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Excerpts John 13:33-35 NIV

How clear and dear to the heart of our Lord Jesus were the words he first spoke to his disciples after announcing he was leaving them! Earlier in the evening, he had declared the long promised New Covenant (Jeremiah 31:31), sealed by his blood (Luke 22:20).

Think of his words—“as I have loved you . . .” He demonstrated his love by laying aside his outer garment, wrapping himself with a towel and taking up the basin. This would be followed by his suffering, death and resurrection. His demonstrated love would become the new high-water mark for all that would be learners of him—disciples.

“By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” It would be the external mark by which observers in the millenniums that followed would know that a company of people was comprised of devoted believers in Jesus.

As His followers, how have we done in the twenty centuries following that day? How are those in your contemporary company of faith doing today? How does His Church in your city demonstrate this mark of authenticity?

It would seem that God’s purpose, revealed through His Son in word and deed, has yet to be fully realized in my life, the company of believers with which I walk and His Church in the city where I live. This creates an ideal place for repentance, intercession and longing for His intended purpose to be displayed on earth as it is in heaven.

Our intercession today would join that of our Lord Jesus on that strategic night. “Father . . . you loved me before the creation of the world.” “I have made you known to (those you have given me), and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.” See John 17:24, 26 NIV

In this season, let us fully embrace His New Covenant and New Commandment as an expression of our devotion to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
