Day 7: Intercession: Hope for America

"But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere.  For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing…" 2 Corinthians 2:14 (ESV)

As I write this, I'm traveling in a bus with a rolling marquee on its exterior: “Pray for America”. As you can imagine, often when we stop, people come up and ask, "What is this about?"  Someone asked me yesterday at the onset of a prayer stop in Wichita Kansas, "Do you think what you are doing is making a difference?"  As Christ followers, YES, everywhere we go we take His aroma.  What an opportunity to take Him to the highways and byways across this vast nation!

You’re probably not praying across the nation on a bus, but everywhere you go you bring an opportunity for others to sense the aroma of all that Christ is: past, present, and future.

As carriers of His fragrance, we are not to live casually or comfortably, but with purpose.  We are on the offensive, not hanging back in a defensive posture. We’re called to great boldness, but in His love and truth, not the abrasive brashness that the world considers bold.  In order to do these things, we need greater faith, a faith that comes out of a deeper experience of who He is.

With so many deep national and global crises, our eyes must be fixed on the Problem Solver more than agony of the overwhelming problems we face.  Yes, the needs are real, and He is the One we must bring these pressing needs, growing in our trust of Him in all things.

The fragrance we carry smells like the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.  As I’ve had opportunity to meet people across America over the last weeks, I’m increasingly aware that the fruit of the Spirit bears fruit of itself; it carries seeds that bring forth new life.  People are easily drawn by genuine love, concern and interest in their lives.  They’re just as easily repelled by judgment, criticism, and rejection.  Did not Christ go with the truth in love because of His desire for them?

Saints, we have been appointed a time to live and if you are reading this, this is your day.  This is the day to humble ourselves, pray, seek His face, turn from our wicked ways.  This is the day, so REJOICE.  This is the day when new doors will open to bring His fragrance everywhere, all day.  Sure, we will fall short along the way, but He is there too.  Where we are weak, He is strong.  This is the day, embrace it for His glory!

Father, today, alert us by Your Spirit to divine appointments. Help us to hear You, seek Your ways, exalt You, and radiate your fragrance because You are in us.  Bring Your aroma  through us  today to someone in great need of salvation, encouragement, and hope of abundant life that starts here and now.  Jesus, it’s in Your name above all names that we approach the glorious Father.  Amen
