10 Days Devotional - Day 9: Longing for Christ’s Return: God’s Economy

Day 9: Longing for Christ’s Return: God’s Economy

“It is more blessed to give than to receive” – Acts 20:35

What would an economy of giving and receiving look like on the earth? Today, in the 21st century, we find ourselves embroiled in an economy, currency and banking system inexorably tied to the global financial markets. These markets are self-acknowledged as driven by fear and greed. Yet fear and greed are sin. How do we reconcile this?

"The greedy... shall not inherit the Kingdom of God" - 1 Corinthians 6:10
"God has not given us a spirit of fear..." 2 Timothy 1:7
"Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life... " Matthew 6:25

Before Christ's return, we know from the Bible that such systems will fail and come under judgment.

"Babylon is fallen...the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury." - Revelation 18:3

Furthermore, as believers, we are commanded to come out from them.

"Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues. For her sins have reached to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities.- Revelation 18:4-5

In longing for Christ's return, we also long for God's kingdom to fully come. This includes God's economy - for His righteousness and justice to prevail. For the current worldly, ungodly, Mammon based systems to be displaced by new economic systems of Jesus Christ's reign.

Do you hear the Lord's call to come out from Babylon? If we come out, what is the alternative? Could it be possible to begin living in Christ’s millennial plans today? Consider several hallmarks of God's economy as they contrast to current systems based on fear and greed:

  • Love your neighbor as yourself - Mark 12:31
  • Lend instead of borrow - Deuteronomy 15:6
  • Forgive debts - Deuteronomy 15:1
  • Give and it shall be given - Matthew 6:28
  • Yes being yes and our no being no - Matthew 5:37
  • God's power instead of manpower - Zechariah 4:6
  • Faith in God's provision - Matthew 6:33

Let’s pray.

Father, show us what it means to come out of Harlot Babylon. Place the plans in our heart for Your eternal economy. Come rescue us from our deepest fears and slavery, especially fears of our financial future. Lord Jesus, come quickly - may we me step into your plans now! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
